SESSHŪ’S APPROACH TO TIME IN HIS INK LANDSCAPE PAINTINGLONG LANDSCAPE SCROLL IN FOUR SEASONS (1486)

This article is devoted to the issue of time as reflected in Sesshū Tōyō (雪舟東洋1420–1503) a Zen monk and one of Japan’s greatest masters of ink painting masterpiece the Long Landscape Scroll in Four Seasons (四季山水長巻Shiki Sansui chōkan, c. 1486, Mori Museum collection). Long Landscape Scroll expresses the quintessence of his religious, world views performed in brilliant ink painting techniques. Sesshu implies varied techniques in the description of time and there is little previous research focused on this aspect in this painting.
